I am committed to supporting and challenging the MPS to ensure that Londoners from every background are encouraged and supported to join the MPS. I want the MPS to look like the city it serves.

It is also important that all police officers have the inter-cultural competencies to police a city like London and engage with its diverse communities.

Over the next two years, the MPS will be recruiting 5000 police officers. They have set themselves an extremely ambitious target of increasing the proportion of BAME recruits joining the MPS to 40 per cent.

As I made clear during March's MQT, I'm not certain that a quota system is the best way forward and I feel that this is a rather blunt tool. However, we are trying to encourage entry at senior level, so we are looking at mid-career entry for people from communities across London.
