Community confidence is extremely important and is fundamental to the principle of policing by consent upon which our police service is founded.  That is why I have set the MPS the challenging target of increasing confidence by 20% by 2016 and I am pushing the MPS to focus on recruiting more officers who live in London and are from more diverse backgrounds.

We know the key drivers of public confidence are engagement with the community, fair treatment, effectiveness in dealing with crime and alleviating antisocial behaviour and we are tracking performance against these.  This focus will be reinforced at the next MOPAC challenge on confidence on 25 March where the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Stephen Greenhalgh and others will be exploring the issues in more detail and holding the police to account for delivery.
