I am supportive of light rail in London. As you are aware, we already have two well established light rail systems in the form of Tramlink and the Docklands Light Railway. This is further demonstrated by the recent investment that has taken place in the Tramlink system. This includes new rolling stock, double-tracking key parts of the network and capacity improvements at stations such as Wimbledon.  Tramlink plays an important role in moving millions of people across south London and supporting growth in locations such as Croydon and Wimbledon. There are further opportunities to enhance the existing network in locations such as Croydon, where TfL is working closely with the Borough.

TfL has also identified potential extensions of the current system to Crystal Palace and Sutton.  These extensions are not funded in the TfL Business Plan and TfL has been working with the local boroughs to explore innovative ways of securing funding contributions to these extensions through the use of the Community Infrastructure Levy and other local funding mechanisms.  A key focus has been to assess the potential impact of such extensions on development in the area and the contribution that this development could then make towards funding of the infrastructure.
