London is set for a population explosion in the coming years, with the population set to reach 10 million by 2030. My 2020 Vision for London sets out the agenda for what London needs to do to manage this increase.

This includes developing Opportunity Areas and other brownfield sites, such as the Royal Docks, Lee Valley and London Riverside, to create hundreds of thousands of new homes and new jobs. We need to build around 42,000 homes every year across London if we are to meet the population challenge.

The capital needs to continue to invest in its transport infrastructure and build on the recent surge of investment such as Crossrail and the upgrade of the Tube. We are going ahead with the electrification of the Gospel Oak to Barking Overground line, which is now being extended to Barking Riverside. The new extension will enable development of the largest single site in London for new housing. Barking Riverside will see 11,000 new homes, 6,000 jobs and 5 new schools built on a near 450 acre site.
