I am aware of calls by some local residents to retain a bus station at Vauxhall once the redevelopment work takes place. As you are no doubt aware, major new development is taking place in Vauxhall and this is bringing much needed jobs and homes to Lambeth Borough and London. Lambeth Council and Transport for London have been working together to ensure that this opportunity brings with it improvements to the transport infrastructure and public realm, including the experience for pedestrians, cyclist and bus users.

The first stage of this work was to look at whether or not it is possible to change the gyratory into two way streets. The emerging findings are that in terms of traffic movement and capacity, it is possible to transform the gyratory in this way. Lambeth and Transport for London are moving on to the next stage of the work and this involves looking at how two way working, if it goes ahead, will affect buses and pedestrians. This will involve the consideration of whether two way working means that the existing bus station needs to change or not; and how pedestrians and cyclists will be affected.

A public consultation is proposed for autumn of this year when we will bring all of this together in one place and ask the local community to comment on the ideas before any decisions are taken. This is a complicated junction and one of the busiest in London but we are committed to making sure that improvements are made that make the area much better for everyone who lives, works or travels through Vauxhall.
