The Mayor's updated VAWG Strategy prioritises tackling harmful cultural practices, including FGM.

The MPS Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command (SC&O 2/5) is responsible for tackling FGM.

The MPS has strategic targets to raise awareness of FGM and to increase the number of referrals from partner agencies, in particular the NHS and to increase reporting from members of the public.

The MPS has worked with the NSPCC to establish a FGM Helpline and have provided training for their staff. In addition, protocols with the Crown Prosecution Service and the National Health Service have been agreed where these agencies undertake to report suspected offences to the police as child abuse.

As a result, in 2013, the MPS saw a 165 per cent increase in FGM referrals.
