On 6th May 2013 you wrote to the Home Secretary and are quoted as saying 'Following briefing by the [Met] commissioner I am broadly convinced of the value of having water cannon available to the MPS [Metropolitan police service] for those circumstances where its absence would lead to greater disorder or the use of more extreme force'. Do you consider you have a mandate to introduce the use of water cannons?

It is for the Home Secretary to decide whether or not to license the use of Water Cannon on the UK mainland. As the elected Mayor of London, I am responsible for MPS's budget including any potential expenditure such as the purchase of water cannon.
