Question

180,000 more Londoners are now paid less than the London Living Wage when compared to 2007. Do you agree that future sustained increases in the number of Londoners paid less than the London Living Wage should result a switch in focus away from a voluntary approach to a statutory approach?

No, a key factor in the success of the Living Wage in London to-date has been its voluntary nature, with increasing numbers of businesses acknowledging that committing to paying to Living Wage rate makes good business sense. The example of London shows that it is possible to make great strides with the voluntary approach we are currently employing.
