The MPS used to split theft person into snatch and pickpocketing for their own purposes.  As of 01 April 2012, this has stopped and all is recorded under theft from person with no breakdown. This is consistent with Home Office counting rules.

Theft From Person is Snatch and Picking Pockets offences; a theft without the use or threat of force where property is stolen from the physical possession of the victim e.g. pick-pocketing and snatches.

For the purposes of comparison, data for theft person has been provided for the last 3 calendar years.

The rise in theft from person offences has largely been driven by an increase in thefts of mobile phones. MOPAC and the MPS are working with manufactures and the public to design out crime and keep people's property safe. Emerging trends seem to show these efforts are beginning to reverse the upward trend.
