The HMIC calculation of "frontline" officers is derived annually from the Home Office return which is compiled each March and submitted in May.

There is a half yearly return to the Home Office which does not provide the same level of detail but which the MPS has developed internally to provide an equivalent figure. The table below sets out the position at September 2013.

Police Officers (FTE)

Frontline

26276 (85.8%)

Non Frontline

4,355 (14.2%)

Total

30,631 (100%)

This table shows an increase from the position at March 2013 when the equivalent figures were 25,291 FTE (83.2%).
