Question

Your FreeSport programme aims to target groups which traditionally have not taken part in regular sport. Research from YouGov and Stonewall has found that in 2012 only one in twenty gay and bisexual men participated in an organised team sport, with more than six in ten expecting to experience homophobia if they did. How has FreeSport engaged with gay and bisexual Londoners?

My aim within grassroots sport in London, and the remit of the London Community Sports Board, is to increase participation in sport and physical exercise, focusing on those groups of Londoners who are most likely to be 'inactive'.

Research conducted by Sport England in 2012 showed that the percentage of gay, lesbian and bisexual people participating in sport and/or physical activity is significantly above average. My FreeSport programme is open to all Londoners. Sport England is represented on the London Community Sports Board and I am supportive of its work with partner organisations, such as Pride Sports, to break down barriers faced by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community.
