Compulsory fitness testing was a recommendation of the Winsor report.

Police officers deal with incidents or circumstances in which a certain level of physical strength and stamina is necessary for their own safety and effectiveness and the safety of their colleagues and the public.

Communities have the right to expect that police officers and front line police staff are fit for duty.  The annual fitness test will ensure that MPS officers have a consistent basic level of fitness.

The MPS expects to see an increase in the general health and wellbeing of their officers and will evaluate the impact of the fitness test after year one of implementation.
