Secretary of State Eric Pickles rejected a planning application for residential development in Castle Point Borough Council local authority area because the proposed homes were on Green Belt land, despite recognising the area's 'severe lack' of housing land supply. Do you agree that even a severe lack of housing land supply is not sufficient justification for building on Green Belt?

Each case must be judged on its merits.

The Secretary of State's own decisions on applications for housing development in the Green Belt, some of which he has approved and some rejected, demonstrate that such generalisations cannot be made.
