Question

Croydon's trams only emit 46 per cent of the CO2 per passenger km of a bus and only 85 per cent of that emitted by London Underground operations. Will you ensure that TfL gives serious thought to expanding tram services in London in order to tackle poor air quality?

Please see my answer to MQ 2403 /2013.

By way of note normalised emissions from trams is 60 per cent of that from London Underground and 55 per cent of that from buses. It should also be noted that CO2 emissions are not a cause of poor air quality, which is caused by PM and NOx. Since trams are powered by electricity they do not impact on local air quality.
