How likely is it that, if the decision was made to build a 3rd runway at Heathrow, BAA would abandon any hope of building a 4th runway?

This is extremely unlikely.

A third runway on the existing Heathrow site would not deliver the level of hub capacity that the UK's needs to compete effectively on the world stage in the coming decades.

Heathrow Ltd (formerly BAA) have stated publicly that they are looking at four runway options in the context of their submission to the Government's Airports Commission.

If a third runway were to be built it would only be a matter of time before Heathrow called for a fourth.
