The 8 per cent increase followed the lowest number of killed and seriously injured on the roads in twenty years in 2011/12.

The category of killed and seriously injured covers a wide spectrum, ranging from a relatively minor non-life changing injuries through to a fatality, and for 2012 there was a 17 per cent reduction in fatalities (132 compared to 159).
