Question

According to the first-ever UK Peace Index, Brent is the ninth most violent borough in London. Furthermore, the borough is also rated the 334th most violent local authority in the country. However, statistics released by the Metropolitan Police Service this week showed that crime in Brent had dropped by 13.9 per cent in the last 12 months leading up to March this year. What plans do you have in place to ensure that UK Peace Index does not produce misleading information?

The UK Peace Index (UKPI) and recorded crime statistics are not comparable. The UKPI is produced by the Institue for Economics and Peace, an Australian think-tank that uses a comparative measure that is designed to gauge violence levels and is calculated based on 5 factors - none of which are overall crime levels as recorded by the police.

Crime in Brent is down in the last year and the UKPI found that compared to 2003, 'almost every London borough is more peaceful than a decade ago' and that with significant reductions in homicide 'London is relatively peaceful compared to other major cities worldwide.'
