As you know, I expressed strong concerns to Government over its original proposals regarding permitted development rights for rear extensions particularly because of the way they might undermine my policy to enable boroughs to protect back gardens, a matter of particular concern in densely developed places like London. I welcome the Government's introduction of mandatory neighbour consultation and a system of prior approval when objections are raised; I also intend to work with the London boroughs to monitor the effects of the changes to permitted development rights to assess the impacts that these new permitted development might have on strategic concerns such as 'garden grabbing'.
