Details of the number of incidents of suicide or attempted suicide, where the person was hit by a train, in each of the last ten years, are as follows.

2003/04 - 39 2004/05 - 38 2005/06 - 36 2006/07 - 41 2007/08 - 49 2008/09 - 43 2009/10 - 44 2010/11 - 45 2011/12 - 46 2012/13 - 50

Just over half of these incidents (56 per cent) resulted in a fatality.

Suicide and attempted suicide affects all railways, in the UK and elsewhere. Such incidents are obviously traumatic for all involved - the relatives and friends of those who take such action, the staff who have to deal with the incidents and passengers who may witness them.

TfL works closely with other agencies, including Network Rail, the British Transport Police and the Samaritans, to help prevent and mitigate such incidents, including as part of the National Suicide Prevention Working Group.
