Question

Genesis Housing Association have written to some tenants in Haringey explaining that as a result of the changes to housing benefit, tenants may now be unable to pay their rent and they could be evicted in order for Genesis to return the vacant property to their owner. What action are you taking to ensure that Londoners are not going to be made homeless as a result of the housing benefit changes?

I have secured significant increases in funding for Discretionary Housing Payments to enable local authorities to support vulnerable households affected by the welfare changes. The pot provides £25 million for London boroughs in 2012/13, and an expected £115 million over the next two years.
