Currently our recycling rates are based on recyclates collected before being sorted at MRFs. How do you measure recycling rates of the materials sent for recycling after they have been extracted from co-mingled waste?

That is no longer correct. Recycling rates are calculated by Defra using self-reported local authority waste data. A 5-10 per cent rejection rate factor is generally applied to co-mingled collected recyclable waste to account for any contaminated waste that is not recycled. Where actual reject rates are known, these are included in the recycling rate calculation.
