Question

It is discouraging to see in the apprenticeship starts within the GLA group 2011/12, specifically in MPS and TfL that less than 20% of apprenticeship starts are from BAME background. This compares to a 42% England average. What action are you taking to encourage more young people from a BAME background to start apprenticeships in the MPS and TfL, especially given the difficulty the MPS have in engaging with young BAME communities?

The Group have made good progress in supporting applications from more diverse groups. Work has included working with BAME community organisations to encourage applications for roles. Within the TfL supply chain a number of initiatives are underway, including running a programme with Construction Youth Trust and the Engineering Consortium partners to look at attracting more diverse candidates from BAME background.
