I am pleased to see that London is leading on female apprenticeship starts 2011/12 with 55% compared to the England average of 52.5%. However, the GLA group apprenticeship starts show some discouraging figures with the GLA only having 37.5% female starts, London Fire Brigade 17.2%, TfL 14.1%. You said that you are leading the way when it comes to apprenticeships, so what action are you taking to encourage more female apprenticeship starts within the GLA group?

I recognise that more can be done to support female apprenticeship starts within the GLA Group and am making efforts to ensure this is an area we focus on. TfL for example have made significant effort to increase female take-up including inviting Head teachers/Careers Advisors from girls schools, presentations to the women's staff network to encourage female members of staff to promote our scheme to young women outside TfL and using female apprentices in recruitment campaigns as well as ensuring gender neutral recruitment processes
