For a number of years the Police Service has trained new recruits through an Initial Learning Programme (IPLDP) to achieve a Diploma in Policing which is now accredited by a 10 unit Diploma. The Certificate in Knowledge of Policing (CKP) is derived from that Diploma which includes both a knowledge element and a significant element of assessment of occupational competence that only be gained in an operational context. The Certificate represents the knowledge element of the Diploma that can be accredited outside of an operational policing environment. The MPS is reviewing how it might provide appropriate financial assistance to improve the opportunities for serving specials and PCSOs who wish to become regular police officers. This would help meet the costs associated with completing the CKP, which currently costs £800+.
