Question

Thank you for your answer to my question 723/2013 in which you state that Transport for London expect a 2-3% increase in traffic across London by 2018. Do you expect this rise to have started by the end of your Mayoral term in 2016? Is there any indication from trip figures taken during the last year of any reversal in the pattern of traffic reduction which has taken place during the last decade?

In terms of observed traffic volumes, the trend was downwards until 2011/12. More recent data for 2012/13 however suggest a small increase (c.1 per cent) on the previous year, which may partly reflect a turnaround from the recent recession. We expect the turnaround to occur before 2016, but it is too early to understand if the rise seen in 2012/13 will be sustained throughout the period.
