Question

The recent Francis report into the appalling mis-treatment of patients at mid Staffs Hospital highlighted the key impact of the trust board's decision to try to save £10m in 2006-07, as part of its desire to gain foundation trust status. With regard to this worrying motivation, do you have any concerns for Londoners' safety following The Whittington Hospital's recent decision to save £4.8million and cut 570 jobs in their attempt to achieve foundation trust status? Have you had any discussions with the trust about their plans?

Clearly what happened at Stafford hospital is very concerning. I welcome the Francis report and look forward to the Department of Health's full response to it. It is important that lessons are learnt to prevent this happening again.

The proposals for the Whittington are currently in consultation and I will ensure that my response will seek reassurance that the changes will improve and not negatively impact healthcare provision for the local population.
