Question

In response to previous questions (MQ2792/2012 and MQ3299/2012), you stated that the capacity of route 343 will be sufficient as long as the service is reliable then confirmed that route 343 consistently meets the reliability targets set by TfL. A regular user of the 343 bus has therefore asked me to ask you the following questions:

a) Could the Mayor therefore explain why, as route 343 is performing reliably, passengers report buses on route 343 are severely overcrowded during the morning peak on a daily basis?

b) Could the Mayor also explain why passengers are left behind by route 343 in Southampton Way and Wells Way, where no other transport services are available, on a daily basis?

c) If TfL's surveys show that capacity is accurate, but the people who use route 343 on a daily basis disagree, does this not raise questions over the accuracy of those surveys? Does the Mayor now accept that route 343 is inadequate to meet the needs of people living in those areas?

We have, as promised, conducted further surveys of this route. The most recent, taken in mid-November, show that an adjustment to the schedule will now be beneficial, to concentrate more of the service into the busiest half-hour period. TfL is working to deliver this at the earliest opportunity and will let you know when it is introduced.
