The London bus fleet is already amongst the cleanest in the UK at an average age of 5.8 years old.

There are currently around 4,000 buses in the fleet that do not meet the Euro IV standard for NOX. TfL plans, as part of a jointly-funded DfT and TfL programme, to raise an initial 900 Euro III buses up to the Euro IV engine emission standard for NOx by fitting abatement equipment.

This, coupled with annual fleet replacement, will mean there will be roughly 900 buses out of a fleet of 8,700 that may be below the proposed standard in 2015. I will continue to explore opportunities for potential external funding to bridge this gap with more retrofit work or early bus replacement.
