Further to the European Commission granting a time extension for Greater London to meet the EU limit values for PM10, (i) what short-term measures does your final Air Quality Strategy include; and (ii) what 'short-term measures' to 'control, or, where necessary, suspend activities which contribute to the risk of the limit values being exceeded' are you going to put in place by 11 June 2011 to ensure that the PM10 daily limit value is not exceeded after the exemption period?

Chapter 3 of my Air Quality Strategy includes a number of local measures designed to provide reassurance that hotspots in central London will meet EU limit values for PM10 in 2011. Many of these are now underway, including trials of dust suppressants, redeployment of the lowest emitting buses and measures to reduce vehicle idling. Other measures will be introduced over the next few months. The GLA will work with the Government to ensure that information about these measures is provided to the European Commission.
