Question

There has been widespread support for reducing the plethora of guidelines and returning the use of discretion to police officers. What police training is currently in place to instruct police on how to use discretion; and what more can be done to ensure staff have the right skills to make independent judgements and are trained appropriately?

I am informed by the MPS that, as part of their initial training all police recruits are extensively trained, issued with lesson notes and undertake scenario based practical sessions to determine when discretion may be exercised.

The training and methods are continually under review to make sure they are up to date and in line with current guidelines.
