Question

I have been approached by an inspiring young man who runs marathons despite having had one leg amputated. He would love to run middle and long distance events in London's 2012 Olympics but amputees may only run 400m in the Paralympics. Will you join me in lobbying the Paralympic Authorities to enable all athletes, including amputees like this young man, to demonstrate the power of their abilities rather than be hidden away according to an imposed definition of disability?

It is the job of the International Paralympic Committee and International Sports Federations to consider potential events for inclusion in the Paralympic Games, by objectively measuring each potential competition against a number of factors, including universality, gender representation, sport class representation and the number of athletes competing. It would not be appropriate for me to intervene in this process, which must be independent, fair and based on these criteria.
