Question

In answer to my question 2757/2009 In October 2009 you stated that there were no legal obstacles to the setting up of the museum. How do you then account for a report to the Strategic and Operational Committee of the MPA on 3 September that lists a number of legal obstacles, which you Chair, notably stating that; 'The MPA has no express power to create or fund a museum', and that 'Counsel has previously advised that it is very difficult to argue that a museum which focuses upon the history of policing in London would 'reasonably support' the maintenance of an efficient and effective police force' ?

My earlier response reflected the legal advice available to me at the time. The GLA has contributed £15k for a feasibility study to explore how this museum might best be developed.

The findings from this feasibility study will be available by the end of November, and will be presented to the Strategic and Operational Committee of the MPA at their next meeting in early December. The study will address relevant issues, including any legal ones, and recommend a way forward.
