My Deputy Mayor for Policing, Kit Malthouse, is working closely with the Met and other London partners to crack down on the trafficking and sexual exploitation of women ahead of the 2012 Games. A multi-agency network has been established, co-ordinated and led by the GLA, MPA, MPS and the Equalities and Human Rights Commission which will develop initiatives to prevent, reduce and raise awareness of human trafficking and sexual exploitation ahead of the 2012 Games.

The MPS Clubs & Vice unit (CO14) has established an Olympic Boroughs Vice Team funded by the Home Office Migration Impact Fund. CO14 have recently conducted a thorough review of London vice premises resulting in operations targeting traffickers in the Olympic footprint. This has led to an increase in trafficking prosecutions.

CO14 is also working in partnership with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), international NGOs and foreign law enforcement partners to raise awareness in source countries and a bid has made a bid to the EU for funding to address trafficking routes in or via Eastern Europe which include Russia, SE Asia and China.

Through my violence against women strategy, I will also be tackling the demand side of prostitution by lobbying for the banning of sex adverts in newspapers, working with the MPS and local authorities to conduct clean up operations targeting prostitute cards in phone boxes and challenging public attitudes around the acceptability of paying for sex.
