London Underground has a close relationship with other metro systems around the world, including the RATP, and is always open to learning from, and sharing information, with other metros.

The recent invitation to tender for the re-signalling of the sub-surface lines included provisions designed to minimise the need for access to the line outside of engineering hours while the work is carried out. This was based in part on the benchmarking LU has done with other metros and their experiences of upgrades. LU is committed to carrying out the upgrade of the Tube in a way that minimises disruption to passengers.

It should be emphasised however that one of the key lessons learnt through comparing the maintenance and renewal of different metro systems is that consistent and high level of funding over many years enables progressive, less intrusive works than the massive cyclical investment needed to overcome such a backlog.

Moreover, the upgrade of the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines by Tube Lines is governed by the PPP contract and LU is under an obligation to provide Tube Lines with 'reasonable access' to carry out the upgrade with little control over how the work is planned.
