Question

This is partly for the record but you can respond to this. We would firmly support you going to Mr Mandelson on this matter but I think, for the record, the GLA has in its resources a turnover of £13 thousand million a year and, within that, you are not, to my knowledge, spending a single jot on pursuing this internally. Indeed the London Development Agency (LDA) has in its recent reprioritisation reduced the amount of funding in support for small and medium enterprises in London. I think you need to put Londoners' money where our mouths are. I agree with you totally that London needs to look forwards but leadership from you is important and forever running to the Government is not the answer to every question.

If I could see a question in that, Chair, I would try to answer it. We have actually contributed. I think the body being attacked was the LDA. We have launched a £23 million plan to help small businesses particularly to advertise how they can get credit during the recession and a business angel scheme to help small businesses in London. There are huge programmes currently underway by the LDA to help small businesses deal with the downturn.
