Anthony Browne has a mathematics degree from Cambridge University, specialising in mathematical micro-economics. After leaving university, he worked as a business analyst for the leading management consultant Booz Allen and Hamilton. He reported business and economic issues for many years at the BBC, as a business reporter, economics reporter and economics correspondent, working on programmes including Today Programme, the World Tonight, the Money Programme, Business Breakfast, One O'Clock TV News and Nine O'Clock TV News. He has been economics correspondent and deputy business editor of the Observer newspaper, writing a best-selling book on the arguments for and against Britain joining the European single currency; won a global business journalism award for best banking journalist; and was highly commended in the British Press Awards as a financial journalist. As Europe correspondent for the Times newspaper, he covered a range of competition and other EU financial-related issues, as well as the World Economic Forum in Davos. Before being appointed as Policy Director to the Mayor of London, he was director of the think tank Policy Exchange, overseeing its research programme including a range of reports and seminars on economics and business issues, including taxation, welfare to work and the dangerous level of debt in the British economy.
