Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is a piece of technology used very effectively to enhance crime detection and tackle terrorism. It relies upon information and data being held by enforcement agencies. I am informed however, that it is not primarily used to tackle speeding and dangerous driving.

These offences are enforced using a combination of static and mobile safety cameras and video recorders (PROVIDA) fitted to traffic vehicles.
