Route N22 was shortened to operate between Piccadilly Circus and Fulwell in January 2006. At the same time, an all night service was introduced on route 281 between Hounslow and Tolworth via Twickenham, Fulwell, Teddington, Hampton Wick and Kingston. The scheme was developed in response to requests for more inter-suburban night-time services to and from Kingston town centre, and to assist in improving reliability for the majority of users of rotue N22. Since then, the total number of passengers boarding or alighting on the Fulwell - Hampton Wick - Kingston section of the 281 has increased by around 40%, indicating that the 24-hour service on route 281 is, on balance, more attractive than the former N22 service. Usage on the remaining sections of the N22 has also increased partly due to improved reliability. This scheme has therefore been successful and TfL is not considering restoring a direct central London link.
