Transport for London figures published on 1 October reveal that one third of all car journeys between 8am and 9am on school days are "education related". What further steps will your administration take to reduce vehicles on the 'school run'?

The figures to which you refer were published in conjunction with the 'School Travel Plan Programme Annual Report 2007/08' which sets out the extensive work undertaken by TfL and the London boroughs to help reduce reliance on the private car and encourage greater use of walking, cycling and public transport for journeys to school. The outcome of this work is that schools where an approved travel plan is in place have recorded an average 6.4% mode shift from private car. The report also highlights the work that will be undertaken by TfL and its partners to continue to progress this important area of work, including achievement of the target of all schools in the Capital having a travel plan in place during 2009.
