My commitment is to support the work of the C40, the C40 Chair and ensure that London shows leadership within the C40 by delivering lower emissions and energy efficiency in London. London is a world leader in this area and I am determined that it continues to play that role. For example we have led the way on the retrofit programmes to improve energy efficiency in municipal buildings. So far 42 buildings with a floor-space of 1.1 million sq. foot are being retrofitted. We are now actively looking at the next tranche and how to make this programme available to the rest of the public sector in London which represents fully 25 per cent of commercial building emissions. We are also learning from other cities for example on the bike hire scheme in Paris. I have already committed to attend both the C40 large cities summit in Seoul in May 2009 and the COP15 UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. I have also stated my intention that London hosts a major C40 conference during my Mayoral term. GLA officials have attended, on my behalf, a C40 conference in Tokyo on climate change adaptation in order to share with other cities lessons learned from developing the London Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and to take forward some joint actions including developing expertise on heat wave plans. In addition my advisers and myself have participated in two Steering Group meetings (by conference call).
