Question

I understand that curtailing street prostitution has recently become a ward priority for the Streatham Hill and St Leonards Safer Neighbourhood Teams, even though this type of issue clearly stretches beyond SNT boundaries. Lambeth Police abolished their Vice Unit 6 months ago which dealt with such issues across the Borough. Will you ask Lambeth police to reconsider their decision in light of this increase in street prostitution in this area and in other parts of Lambeth such as Brixton Road, Brixton Hill, Josephine Avenue, Christchurch Road, Hillside Road, Somers Road and Tooting Bec Common?

The Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) are best placed to deal with street prostitution, by promoting multi-agency working in the various boroughs, in partnership with stakeholders. It would seem inefficient for the borough to also establish a Vice Unit given the SNT role. The resources within the SNTs compared with that provided by the old Lambeth Vice Unit, makes them better equipped to tackle street prostitution thus improving quality of life for the people of London. Additionally, SNTs support a multi agency approach as recommended by the Home Office paper 'A co-ordinated Prostitution Strategy' published in January 2006. In April 2009 I intend to publish my draft Violence Against Women Strategy which will include issues around prostitution.
