As part of the scheme design, TfL has developed a side road strategy that seeks to remove rat-running traffic from adjacent side roads. In 2005, TfL awarded £4m to the London Boroughs of Enfield, Haringey and Barnet for complementary traffic calming measures on roads surrounding the Scheme. The intention of such measures is to discourage traffic from diverting on to local residential side roads. Some of the complementary traffic calming measures have already been introduced by the boroughs. TfL is looking to introduce some of the proposed through road closures and banned turns at the commencement of the works to further discourage such diversion.
