There does seem to be progress therefore of a sort on making life easier for Londoners to pay the Charge which is certainly to be welcomed. I am very surprised that you say these two technologies are not quite compatible. You have automatic number plate recognition which is already working. You have your Oyster card which is already working. I would have thought that it would be a fairly simple matter as soon as the camera picks up the number plate to identify the driver and dock it from his Oyster card. That seems to me to be a very good solution, make life a lot easier and reduce administration.

We inherited the Oyster scheme and it is a bit crude. We can move over a couple of years to being able to debit people's congestion charge direct from their bank account. We are hoping that within a couple of years that option will be there for Oyster as well; that the Oyster card would just deduct from people's bank accounts so you will not even have to go through the hassle of logging on and transferring money and all of that. The present Oyster card technology has got a couple of years still to run before we have got that next generation in play. They are working on it already.
