Question

In light of Time Out's recent article, `Why are the arts so white?', does the Mayor agree that this undeniable phenomenon underlines the enormous importance of celebrating Black History Month and join me in congratulating the Gain professional development programme for its work in encouraging individuals from BAME communities to serve on the boards of arts and sports organisations in London?

I strongly agree. Most of the boards of arts and cultural organisations in the capital do not reflect London's diversity. I am deeply committed to changing this. The Gain programme has grown from strength to strength and was a huge success this year with over 130 applicants from professional BME individuals. 40 potential board members were chosen alongside 37 arts and sports organisations to go through the programme.

Black History season, many cultural festivals e.g. London Mela, Eid, Diwali and Africa Day and the Mayor's Commission on African and Asian Heritage are among many initiatives which my office organises to promote the arts, culture, history and heritage of the many different communities who either work, live or study in London.
