Under the terms of the contracts, Operators are required to have regard to the need to preserve and protect the environment and to mitigate any adverse effects on the environment. They must ensure that all materials are disposed of in a safe and lawful manner, so as not to interfere unnecessarily or improperly with the environment. With regards the issue of free evening newspapers, TfL have had positive discussions with the distributors of newspapers about stopping the practice of papers being put on to the buses. TfL are also due to meet London Remade shortly to discuss the options available for recycling of newspapers at the bus operator's depots. TfL is also in the process of developing an Environmental Management System which will include looking at ways to better manage and reduce their waste, where possible.
