I strongly support the use of water butts by everyone who has a garden to water. There is nothing to gain, and much to loose, by using drinking water for garden watering when there is rainwater available. Its use reduces the carbon dioxide emissions that arise through treating and pumping water as well as the load on the sewer system. Local councils should certainly promote rainwater use. Water butts are covered in the Code for Sustainable Homes and should be regarded as a standard improvement to the whole of the housing stock, including council properties.
