Question

The Town Centre Manager in Peckham comments that crime incidents in Peckham are reduced on the occasional days when Southern Railways carry out ticket revenue enforcement at Peckham Rye Station. Do you think crime and anti-social behaviour on the railways would be reduced if such operators had proper ticketing arrangements including the Oyster pre pay scheme?

There is evidence to suggest that the provision of ticket gates at stations helps to reduce both crime and anti-social behaviour on the railway. The responsibility for the gating of Peckham Rye Station rests with the train operator Southern. However, I am not aware that they have any plans to do this.
