Why are students with home residence in London not eligible for the valuable Student Oyster card reductions? Is it not unrealistic for Transport for London to expect each university outside London to go through the process of registering its students for these benefits? Why cannot TfL accept documentation from students establishing both their home residency and their status as university students?

The student discount scheme is designed to compensate for some of the costs that students in London can face commuting to and from college on a daily basis, generally at peak times. Students with home residence in London are eligible for Student Oyster card reductions, provided that:· They are pursuing a course of study at a registered London college· Their college is outside the London area (at Epsom or Reading, say) but they commute to it from London. In this case, the college must register under the scheme, though discounts are only available to the edge of the TfL boundary.· They are studying at a more distant University such as Manchester or Hull, but are living in London during term time on a placement. In this case, the college does not need to register but must authenticate the student's application.Students living in London only during the vacation are not eligible. The aim of the scheme is to assist students studying in London.
