The Tram represents a substantial investment in transport, which I believe is vital to the future of west London and to the prosperity of west Londoners. The tram offers a better, faster, cleaner, and more reliable way of travelling as well as providing step-free access at all stops, thereby supporting the my aim of ensuring London's transport system is accessible to all.TfL continues to work to deliver this ambitious project, which has the genuine potential to support the area's social and economic development and provide a legacy for the future. There is a compelling case for this scheme as it offers the best transport solution to meet predicted rises in passenger numbers as well as supporting the agenda for more sustainable modes of transport. The estimated cost of this important scheme is £648m in Q4 2002 prices, as was reported to the TfL Board in April 2004, and quoted in the Assembly Transport Committee's response to TfL's public consultation on the scheme in 2004. This includes forecast costs and a substantial contingency, in accordance with DfT guidance.
