The Health Service Journal report on NHS workforce planning certainly highlights the complexity of this issue and flags up some difficult decisions ahead. It also showshow many additional health staff have been trained over recent years. My main concern in this area continues to be to support the NHS and other health partners to attract, train, retain and develop a diverse and highly-skilled workforce to meet Londoners' current and future health needs. I am very pleased that the Chief Executive of the London Strategic Health Authority, Ruth Carnall, is a member of the Skills Board (?correct title) ensuring the skills issues for the health sector are actively considered in developing the Adult Skills Strategy. This builds on the constructive ongoing involvement of DH and NHS representatives in a range of initiatives related to skills, workforce and employment for London.
